Absolute Contraindications
- Eyes: The laser beam must never be aimed at the eyes, and appropriate protective eyewear is required for everyone in the treatment area to prevent serious internal eye damage.
- Pregnancy: Treatment is contraindicated over the developing fetus.
- Malignancy: Avoid treating areas of known or suspected cancer.
Relative Contraindications
- Photosensitivity: Patients taking photosensitizing medications or those with conditions that increase light sensitivity should avoid treatment.
- Hemorrhage: Be cautious with patients on blood thinners or with active bleeding, as the therapy could potentially worsen a hemorrhage.
- Pacemaker: Avoid treating over areas near the heart if the patient has a pacemaker.
- Tanning: Recently tanned skin increases the risk of burns and pigmentation changes.
- Epilepsy: Patients with seizure disorders should be treated with extreme caution, as certain light frequencies could trigger a seizure.
- Thyroid Gland: Do not treat directly over a hyperactive thyroid gland.
- Growth Plates: Caution is advised when treating over areas of bone growth centers.
- Hemorrhagic Conditions: Patients with a tendency toward heavy bleeding should be evaluated carefully.
