How Calmare Therapy Works

During Calmare treatment, we attach electrodes to the area(s) of a patient's body that requires attention. Those electrodes send vibrations – artificial neurons – to the affected areas, where they interact with and influence the C-fiber of the nerve, in essence, "resetting the pain signal." In 80 percent of cases, patients experience pain relief during the initial session, with follow-up treatments conducted until the pain is fully alleviated.

Calmare Treatment

Laura Brown, PT, will go over the paperwork with you and gain a thorough understanding of your condition before beginning your first session. If the first session is tolerable, we will schedule the remainder of the appointments. The national average number of sessions is 10. However, this number is an average. The standard treatment is conducted Monday-Friday for two weeks. Due to the need for consecutive therapies, we will not schedule new patients on Thursday or Friday.

"Booster" Treatments

Pain relief from Calmare Therapy may or may not be permanent. Like the number of needed sessions, Calmare cannot predict how long relief will last and will depend on multiple variables. Once pain returns, patients need to return for "booster" treatments. Recurring pain is usually eliminated with 1-3 sessions if not left for too long.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • I have metal implants. Is Calmare contraindicated?

If the metal implant does not contain iron or produce its current, such as a stimulator or pacemaker, it is not a contraindication to receive Calmare Therapy. Most recent materials for joint replacements and spine supports do not contain iron, but ask your surgeon if you feel more comfortable doing so.

  • Can I use Calmare Therapy if I have an implanted stimulation device?

No one with a cardiac pacemaker or spinal stimulation device should use Calmare, even if the device is off.

  • Is Calmare invasive and are there side effects?

Not at all. Calmare uses non-latex surface electrodes to deliver gentle stimulation. There are no known side effects.

  • How long can I expect pain relief to last after a Calmare session?

During your first cycle, pain will return, although relief periods should become more prolonged and intensity decrease as it does return.

After your cycle of therapy, relief periods vary. You can expect pain relief generally for 1-6 months. In some cases, more extended periods of comfort can occur. Boosters can re-deliver relief periods once pain re-emerges.

  • How will I know if this treatment works for me?

Once we place the electrodes correctly, you will experience decreased pain or become pain-free. In subsequent treatments, pain re-emerges with less intensity, and the relief period lasts longer. We recommend three sessions to witness this for yourself.

  • How long do sessions last?

Sessions last approximately one hour plus time to position the electrodes (possibly longer on the first visit). One treatment a day is given, typically Monday-Friday, for an average of 2 weeks. Specific cases may need more or less.

  • What will I feel with stimulation?

At first, you may feel a stinging or biting sensation. Your provider will dial intensity slowly to reach a tingling or vibrating sensation. Constant communication with your provider is essential as to the quality and power of the feeling.

  • Do I need to combine medications or treatments with Calmare?

Calmare is a stand-alone treatment that does not need a combination of any other medication or treatment. If you remain on (non-anticonvulsant) pain medications, it is crucial to stay in communication with your physician. It may be prudent to change the required dosage due to the success of Calmare Therapy.

  • Can Calmare cure me?

No, Calmare will not cure or correct the underlying condition causing the pain. Calmare treats chronic neuropathic pain as a separate and distinct problem by changing the message the nerves are sending to the brain from pain to no pain.

Nor will Calmare permanently eradicate pain. Eventually, pain returns in roughly 1-6 months. It can happen sooner or later than that time frame based on an individual's response to therapy and lifestyle factors. When pain reoccurs, we provide booster treatments, and previous levels of comfort return in 1-3 sessions typically.

  • Is Calmare Covered by insurance?

Currently, New York State's insurance does not cover nightmare therapy. Your provider will happily invoice you if you wish to pursue reimbursement. Capital Region Calmare will not bill an insurance company. You may want to inquire if your HSA will cover this treatment.

  • How much does Calmare therapy cost?

After a $62 consultation, Capital Region Calmare Therapy offers patients a discounted initial treatment at $100. Subsequent sessions are $250 per session. Treatment sessions over the average of 10 (sessions 11 and 12) cost $200 per session.

Booster treatments are $200 per session.

Calmare can seem like a significant up-front cost, but remember that results are long-lasting! For example, a patient utilizing ten sessions costs $2,500.00. They also may experience ten months without pain (results vary) even if this patient needs all three booster sessions at an additional cost of $600, bringing the total therapy cost to $3,100.00. For an anticipated 20 months of pain relief, we are now at $155/month or $5.16 per day.
